Oil changes

this is pretty basic, but for those of us easily confused...

I am taking delivery of a new 04 F250 6.0 next week, my first diesel. I have been doing some research on this site and others about oil, oil changes, etc. I drive about 50-50 in town and long trips. I checked the Ford site, and they list an oil change schedule of every 7500 miles. That seems long to me for teh initial change, and longer than I expected for subsequent changes. Hopefully emtabmm, you can give me some input on this.

Also, do you all change your own oil, or do use the dealer or???

Thanks for you input - I am really looking forward to this truck!

I change my own oil. I made my first change at 3800 miles. make sure to read the manual. There are some tips in there about removing the oil filter before putting the drain pan plug back in.

Good luck with the new truck. I hope you enjoy yours as much as I do mine.

Last i heard, it could be different now is that the engines are pre-ran before installation by International. I dont think it is necessary to change the oil before 7500 miles but it certainly wont hurt anything but your pocketbook and that doesnt cost that much.

I have my oil changed at superlube in Tallahassee. It's just a pain to have to cart home 4 gal of oil and then have to get rid of 4 gal of old oil. An oil change in a diesel is not what I would consider "cheap" whether or not you change it yourself or not. I have not had to change the oil yet in my new 6.0, but I understand that the oil filter on the 6.0 costs about 20 to 25 bucks where the 7.3 was like 10. I guess an oil change now is going to be about 65 bucks.

I did my first oil change at 1000 mi next one will be at 3750 per my dealer, then it will be every 3750 after that. I'll alternate between myself and the dealer when doing the oil changes.
Currently using Mobil Delvac 1300 15w-40 which is there non-syn. but at around 10,000 I'll probably switch to Mobil Delvac 1 syn.

This also is my first diesel and am enjoying it a lot. Leaned towards getting the diesel due to possibilty of getting a TT in the future, my kids will love that idea.

thanks for the great input. gip - I agree getting rid of 4 gal of oil is a pain - I hadn't thought about that. I'll ask some questions when I pick it up - especially about the pre-running.

Thanks again to all

Every 3750?? How did you arrive at that number?
Why not 3500 or 5000 so that you can take a quick look at the odometer and know when your due for an oil change.
With those numbers you have to remember to change your oil
at 8500 miles 12250 16000 etc (had to get out the calculator)

but at a 3 or 5 k interval even at a 7500 you can look at the odometer and see when it is due

Just seems easier to me. I'm not one to paste little stickers with my next service due all over the truck

But still why 3750 I dont see that written down anywhere. I know the book says 7500 and I would probably go with 5000.And I see that 3750 is half of 7500 but 3500 would be easier to follow.
I think maybe your dealer told you that number to get you into the shop for service since you said you would do every other service that way he still gets ya every 7500 miles
And why did you change the oil at 1000 miles
that harkens back to the 50's and 60's when you had to get rid of the "break-in" oil

On my T-bird with the turbo I change every 3000 But it is an older car and I tend to run it fast

I change mine every 5000. I'm coming up on the 20,000 mile interval and am sendnig it off for analysis. If all is well, I'll probably change to synthetic next change.

Several posts I've read have said the motor oil from the factory has some die in it and that you should leave it for at least the first 5000 miles. The die is to help them analysis problems from the various oil leaks these are known for, most notably the rear main.

I did mine first one at 5k a couple of weeks ago. I installed a Fumoto valve which will make future oil changes much easier. It's not a bad job at all to do. I get the filters from the local IH dealer for like $15. I plan to stick to the 5k interval.
