Steering Gearbox tips for a first time replacer
Steering Gearbox tips for a first time replacer
Hello I am replacing the steering gearbox on my 89 f150 L6. I want to know where I should start with this project as I have no experience with the power steering system.
Make sure your steering wheel is locked straight and to remove the ragjoint cage splines I remove the 10mm pinchbolt and use a tierod removal fork and its a good to take the opportunity to also change the ragjoint...........
Get a pitman arm puller and first take a 32mm socket and pull the pitman arm off and buy a new pitman arm too.
Youll also need a tierod seperator fork and a socket set to remove the frame through bolts located in area in picture below that hold the steering gear to the frame and also need line wrenches to remove the highpressure and low pressure lines.
If you buy a new arm seperate the union at the draglink with a tierod seperator fork....
I use a DeWalt 20v 1/2" Impact gun w/1200ftlbs torque to get everything instantly blasted apart too......
Rust penetrator like Knocker Loose is good to spray n use too.............
What I also do is tighten up the steeringshaft rods sloppiness up by pulling the rod out then filling cavity w/ thick *** silicone based vacuum grease and reinstalling....Its like night n day as far as steeringwheel feedback goes..
Make sure you put an in-line magnetic filter that has a built-in bypass on the return line too....
It takes me an hour to remove and reinstall one and another 20 mins to do the ragjoint with a 4" grinder and a 4" round metal diamond cutoff wheel ......................
Good Luck
