So I got another build coming up. Just a basic one. And need to get some headers that will fit well with gt40p heads. What you all got? And pictures of the fit and how hard it is to change the plugs with those headers. Thanks in advance!
I wonder if GT40P Explorer headers would fit the frame rails of these trucks? Hell, if anyone even makes them anymore. Maybe check Stan's Headers too. Guess you could start with the OE manifolds from those P vehicles and try from there. I cannot imagine those manifolds flow worse than the OE 302/351 manifolds, but who knows.
Folks in the classic Mustang community used to claim that 289 Hipo manifolds would work with GT40P heads with a little grinding.
They're still manifolds, but they're probably better than most manifolds...
I went with Sanderson Shorty Headers on my 77 302 Dent. Very well made and a good overall fit. However, I don't think they would fit your Y pipe. The Sanderson headers are made for a Mustang, but fit our trucks easily.
I did consider using the stock exhaust manifolds from the Explorer my heads came from. However, it looked to me like they might interfere with my clutch linkage, as they snake way down as they move rearward. These manifolds might work with an auto trans Dent.
Phew, you would easily have $1000 into P heads and headers to fit. Hard pass on that for me.
I would scout around for those old aluminum GT40X FMS heads with pedestal mounts (if you are retaining that rocker style) or the old Edelbrock 1.9" intake units. Lighter, better chamber, and can use any header you really want. I even used Mustang Fox 5.0 ones on mine for a while, fit fine with my AOD and 2x4.
Easy solution is to not get P heads. The standard GT40 heads don't have the header fitment issue as they have the same plug angle as the E7 stock truck heads. I used P heads and can confirm they're kind of a pain. #7 plug is an adventure to change every time.
