What are the current suggestions for brand of wheel spacers? Trying to find 04 18 inch wheels is a pain in the butt so I'm thinking perhaps pursuing later model rims might garner more success.
I used these on my 2001 Excursion this year. Expensive but work well and they provide all new lug nuts. I had to cut off about 3" of the bottom of the wheel well insert on each side to stop some rubbing. Ended up using 20" tires. Will cost more later but was able to find a 2017 set of Tires and Rims off a 2017 F350 for $1300. WheelAdapter.com
i did my research and got the " Hub centric " wheel spacers and had them put on right. 4 months later on thanksgiving day my left front tire fell off and ruined my fender. I parked my Excursion and now besides being pissed. will not use it. I want to use my 2014 F250 wheels without them.

Did the studs break or just the lug nuts back out?
that sounds like either a bad spacer, or improper torquing if it came undone. but i also refuse to use them on the big trucks, i used them for a short while on a mustang just until i got better wheels tho.

Can you elaborate on your wheel spacer experience, your above quote doesn't include any particulars on the mode of failure. There are loads of owner around here that are or have used various wheel spacers without any issues, even some towing fairly heavy.
You can use your 2014 F-250 wheels on your EX without spacers, they will just look goofy sitting inward almost 2" from where they should be and you will have reduced steering angles due to the tires hitting the front leaf springs if a 4X4. That’s why folks use the spacers for the late model wheels.

my experiance suggest that 90% of the 2"+ type we use on the Excursion fail due to inferior studs,
for general street use the lowest quality stud I would accecpt is a factory motorcraft or Dorman. ( we have tested them to prove ) my prefrence would be ARP
Bottom Line, if your wheel studs are not from a known good source with verifiable test results they are cheap chineese junk and WILL fail.
This is the reason I paid the $800 for mine. I'm not an expert in this field but really wanted to run these tires and rims without a lift. Read all the comments on this blog and bought what seemed to be the best ones at wheeladaptor.com.

This may be the answer to a question I have been needing to ask. I'm possibly looking at the same rims to add to my X, but it sounds like the reason for spacers would be that some or all Ford rims going forward may have a "deeper dish", causing that inset you are referring to?
Yes the newer post 05 SD wheels all have very little "dish" set back, back spacing, etc. So if you just bolt them on, they pull the tire in about 2". If you park next to a newer SD, it's very obvious. I have both in my driveway, very easy to see. I learned the issue when I started planning to put fresh wheels and tires on my SD, and move it's wheels and tires to the eX.. Not just a bolt on swap.. weird but true. You can buy aftermarket wheels that bolt right on, they will be lug centric instead of hub centric.. that's a whole other discussion.. But probably what I will end up doing for the eX and just keep the stock 20's on the SD.
BTW, I run 2" aluminum spacers on a 540HP Mustang GT, for nearly a decade so far, no issues.
Maybe I'll keep searching for 18 inch Harley or SVT wheels. I'll probably never see a set of SVT rims again. Somedays I just want to bang my head on the wall!

I'm still looking for one more SVT for a spare. They're out there but expensive in singles.
