Opinions from the "court" on trade in value
Hi All, I have a 2015 Expy XLT, 4x4, 63,500 miles. The truck is in really good condition mechanically and body wise, no accidents, etc. I has been a great TV for my TT over the past 2 years. My plan was to keep it and at about the 80K level pick up a new F250 as the TV. About a week ago I received a $3,500 cash back mailer from Ford and I ordered the F250. The dealer flat out said they would give me $24,000 trade in on the Expy for the F250. I went on KBB and they valued my Expy at about $23K trade in and up to $29,000 on private sale (I paid $30,500 in 2017 with 23K on the clock). So, members of the court, what do y'all think a good trade in value would be?...I know the trade in situation for late model pickups is insane, with dealers having no inventory, don't know what the situation is with Expeditions. Thanks much!...
I see people aren't jumping all over this so I'll put in my two cents. With the last two vehicles we replaced, I cleaned them all up and took them to the local CarMax and had them make me offers to buy outright. They were both nine years old with over 100K miles on them--clean inside and out and everything working. The agent at CarMax admitted that they would just send them to auction, but it was nice knowing the very least I could get for them if the dealer wasn't interested in taking a trade-in. It turned out that both dealers gave me the same amount that CarMax offered. Had I tried to sell them myself, I might have made more...that is if an interested buyer came along; but I no longer have the enthusiasm for dealing with "bargain hunters" and such. Additionally we saved sales tax with trade-ins on the new vehicle purchases.
Before putting any faith in Edmunds or KBB, do should do some real world checking. A lot of dealers are selling mostly used vehicles and looking for new inventory. A clean 4X4 SUV can be an attractive vehicle to put on their used vehicle lot in the winter months. Even if you decide to trade your Expedition in on the new truck, a little leverage never hurts. And taking your dealers flat offer, driving a vehicle for five years for $6,500 in depreciation isn't bad. Your new truck will depreciate that much in the first six months you own it.
