So I bought and installed a '98 transfer case in my '97 Explorer. The '98 has no provision for the '97 speed sensor.
Oops.
After a lot of searching, I know the following:
'98 Explorers use the rear ABS sensor at the axle for speedometer, Speed Control Servo, radio volume, GEM, etc.
'97 Explorer The VSS has 2 wires coming from it, one is grounded in the PCM. The other goes to the GEM, as well as the speed control servo, and also to Pin 33 of the PCM.
Does the VSS in the '97 transfer case send the same square wave as the ABS sensor in the axle?
Could I splice the VSS sensor wiring into the rear ABS sensor on my '97 in order to make the speedo and cruise work?
Unfortunately I don't have a graphing DVOM like the Fluke unit the shop I once worked at had, so, I'm hoping someone here has had experience with both sensors.
It appears that nobody has an answer to this rather technical question.
I remembered receiving training on ABS back in the mid '90s and dug out the books I had saved from it. The pictures are from the '95 Explorer TEBS diagnostics pages. Apparently, the sensor in the rear axle should produce 6 mv/hz or more.
I'm wondering if anyone has the equivalent diag procedure for the speedometer speed sensor? Is it's output the same?
