Actually I think the stock horns are grounded to the frame, and the terminals are positive. Maybe your horn relay is weak and can't handle the bigger horn? Don't know what a Klaxon is.
just noticed that i cant even start up using my remote starter.
gona go see the dudes who put on my new ignition and tumbler and checker auto parts sold me the ign switch.
will tell you what i find.
Originally posted by DanTana Hi, I just finished putting in two newer horns off a Mustang and a horn relay off a Bronco. I got the horns to work with the key off, but found out they won't work with the key on??? I had to ground the one wire directly to the steering column to get it to work at all. But now I'm perplexed since it isn't working with the key on.
Hi Dan.....I have an identicle situation to the horn problem you had....My horn works in the 'off',and accessory position--any chance you found the majic cure??
I have an '85 E350 dually with 460 engine,cruise control,everything stock,including horns..---have re-wired the whole thing from an engine fire,and have pretty much everything working,except fer this!!
Greasymonkey, Unfortunately I still have not found the problem. I thought the new horns and relay would do the trick. I even wired the horn cable inside the steering wheel directly to the steering post, still the same. Only thing I can figure out is to remove the steering wheel altogether and see if their is a clockspring inside it that might be broken or maybe the ignition switch? I'll probably do that once the weather warms up in the spring. If you find out what it could be, please post here for everybody. This is one of the stranger problems I have ever run into. I'm about ready to just wire it to a seperate switch on the dash.
--Yup...I'd consider retro-wiring the horn, but unfortunately I have to get my vehicle through an inspection. After ~125 hours so far to restore things from the fire,I've 'only' spent a day so far.
Did you try re-wiring the yellow wire from the power distribution connector, and connecting a direct 12v+?--I'll try this and the other suggestions before venturing further.
I'll also re-post this question ,in case someone else has come up with it.....cheers!

If you are in a bind, and need the horn working right away, you can buy a universal horn switch and mount it down low on the dash. It's not very handy to get to if you need to use it, but it's perfectly legal where I live and will pass inspection. All the local auto stores carry them.
.......got the horn working, but have no idea of the cause. The horn 'fixed itself' while I was jumbling around with the column.Possibly the connector on the column,I guess....cheers!
I have never had one go bad, but it is my understanding the ground connection is ON the rag joint. It actually connects the steering box grounded to the frame, to the steering shaft which is only connected by rubber.
