I have a 2003 Ford F350 Superduty truck, same as in my signature. The headlights will come on automatically if the light dims, but can they be reprogrammed to come on when in the auto position any time the engine is running?
The 'auto' function on the headlamps in that year truck works based off a sensor on the top center of the dash by the windshield. Looks like a small bubble. When the ambient lighting reaches a certain threshold, the sensor is triggered and the lights will come on (the delay between the sensor being triggered and the lights coming on varies, my '03 was almost instant, my '04 took a second or two).
I actually reprogrammed my '03 to have the lights on whenever the key was on by folding a work glove in half and tucking it over the sensor and between the windshield and dash. It would rarely move, no one ever noticed it, but my lights were on whenever the key was on. I just found a glove roughly the same color as the dash and it worked well.
That said, if you really want to make this change, you can 'bypass' the sensor by unplugging it and jumpering the wires with a properly-rated resistor...I don't know what the resistor has to be rated to, however.

You could re-wire the autolamp control signal from the headlight switch (where it goes to the VSM to enable the autolamp function) over to the accessory delay circuit (or some other suitable HOT IN RUN source).
