I have a 2002 F 250 XLT 4WD SD CC, and I get an intermittent ABS light that comes on and stays lit. It doesn't come on all the time but it's troubling me as there is something lurking. What do you think I should do? Replace the hub assembly? I'm not sure they sell the sensor separately. Thoughts?
Only time I’ve ever had this come on was a bearing hub failure. Jack up your front tires and feel for any play. It should be pretty noticeable right away. Also spin the tire and listen to failing bearings that make noise.
Does it come on after hitting a bump or other rough spot? My 02 is doing this too. Mine comes on as you describe, but only after I hit a hard bump or go down a washboard road or something like that. The reset process works every time for mine. i.e. Stop/Start the truck, drive under I think 10mph for 10 secs. That's not the exact numbers, but it's close, someone will be along soon to correct that.
All of my parts under there are brand new. Hubs, bearings, etc, all replaced a couple of months ago. I did not replace the ABS sensor though. Was doing it before and after the replacements. Somewhere there is a thread around here describing these symptoms and the culprit was the connection on the wiring harness. When I get another break to work on this truck, I am running that one down since mine sounds like loose wiring or a bad sensor. Let us know if you find something simple like that on yours.
Check the wheel bearing. It it's worn enough it will cause the ABS sensor to no longer read the tone ring. The hub movement can make this intermittent.
Mine is intermittent too. You can read the codes to see what exactly is causing the light to come on. Mine is something to do with the ABS module, its not on all the time so when it does pop on I just turn the truck off and start it up then it goes away for a period of time. There isn't much to the system, two sensors in the front and for me one in the rear. The computer looks to see if all are reading speeds and if so if they are all in agreement. If you can get you hands on a code reader that is a good place to start, you should also be able to look at the data and see what the sensors are reading while it is in motion.
Ford (OEM) has these available for $78 each (front hubs). I'm going to keep on eye on it. If the lights remain on more often and more frequently, they are easier enough to change.
