Check engine light/code reader

My 2012 F350 6.7 PS only has 62K miles on it. Today I was driving my son and his family to White Sands National Park from Las Cruces (not towing) and the check engine light came on. Engine and transmission temps were fine, turbo only pulling about 10PSI, everything running smoothly with no unusual noises, and nothing unusual when scrolling through the DIC. The light was still on when I started it up after three hours at the park and the truck got us home over Organ Pass just fine. My question is this: is there an affordable OBD (I assume OBD2 for this model year) reader/scanner that will read all of the codes for the diesel engine? I would prefer to find one locally so I can figure out whether or not the truck can be used over the Thanksgiving holiday and next week for some non-towing duties. I trust the local Ford dealer, but I'm sure they would charge me $100 - $200 to put it on their computers and I'm also sure they couldn't get me in for another week or two.

Thanks

Rob

Any OBD2 reader from WalMart, Autozone, NAPA etc. will read the codes. Then do google search on the code to see what it is.

I would stop by the auto parts store and have it read.

Some follow-up on the situation above... on the advice of @@senix, I dropped by the nearest parts store (Auto Zone). They loaned me their reader which I then took back inside for them to dump and print out the report. It said, "Replace DEF pump assembly." The Ford dealership is within walking distance of the RV park where we're staying, so I dropped in there on the way home. They happened to have had a no-show diesel appointment so one of their diesel techs was available (on the day before Thanksgiving!). It turned out to be the reductant heater... again (it was replaced at about 30,000 miles, too). Since Ford has a TSB on this issue, the heater was replaced with "an updated part number" and there were no charges. The dealer called about 3:00 yesterday afternoon for me to come pick up the truck!

Thanks for the advice.

Great result!

I have never had the heater go out. My 2013 that I owned for 7 years before trade was perfect. All I ever did was wait to <200 to empty prompt, then do a complete fill using the ford fill spout. I never added unless it was low. Primarily used blue def, not that made a difference.

I have an Aucutron (spelling wrong) that keep in the truck for this purpose. I also have a banks Idash and it will read the codes too.

That kind of outcome is on the same level as cheating death. Maybe buy a lottery ticket. You never know.
