Intermittent engine light/how to get code

In the last month Ive gotten 2 instances of the "Engine" light coming on the dash. Looked in the manual and what I read was that it involves the emissions...correct? Both times I was pulling my 37' toyhauler (13K lbs) up a pass and both times its happened when I did not add any Stanadyne to my fuel, outside temps in the high 80s/low 90s. First time I filled up with Safeway diesel it went away after I put in Shell diesel and the stanadyne and went 3 engine start cycles. The second time about 2 weeks later I drove on a trip 370 miles and 3 passes...no problems. Then just before I left for home, fueled up at another Shell station forgot to put in the stanadyne and got the code pulling a pass about 100 miles into my trip home! Good grief! Fueled up close to home, added Stanadyne and today the light went out again (as my wife was going to take it to the dealer). Truck is a 06 f350 4x4 CC dually with the tow boss option, all stock with 12K miles. Is there a backyard way to check codes on the fords? Or will I have to buy a reader/go to Autozone/visit the dealer? Any ideas? Thanks

Autozone might be able to pull the codes, but based on your information you are under warranty so just take it to the dealer. Even if the check engine light isn't on when you take it, if it has come on before then the computer has stored the code.
