My flathead suddenly started making a loud shrill sound after starting. The noise will start and stop and mostly went away after warming up. I thought loose belts but it is not quite that sound and it changes to almost a moaning sound intermittently then all is normal for a while. I tried listening through a piece of tubing but can't locate the spot. Does this sound like water pump failing? I've had the truck close to 20 years and drive it regularly. It was my work truck for about the first 10 years. Thanks for any ideas.
I did readjust them today but they have been at the same tension for a few years without the noise but with occasional belt squeak, or at least what I thought was the belts.
Thanks, I didn’t know it needed oiling but will look in the morning.
You are not alone - mine seized up on me years ago for quite the educational moment.. There is a good write up here on what to look for and what to do: Ford Oil Filled Fan Assy
It drank several ounces of oil and the noise is gone. I guess it took 17+ years to go dry. Thank you so much. I still will have to make a few drives to be sure but I believe that was the problem.
