JFlynn, when you obtain some West Coast mirrors, if you wanna sell your Type 9s, please contact me. My '73 Explorer came with Type 7s and I don't like them.
The type 2 does not stick out as far as the type 3. Here is a pic of my type 3 on my 70 f250.
I want some type 2 for my 72 f250 4x4. I cant say how far the 2's stick out because I have never seen them in person. The outer edge of the mirror in the picture is 19 inches from the top arms attachment point.
Ok so as you can tell from my pictures the type 9 and the type 7 mirrors share the same mount bracket and spacing. Therefore there is no way to know without possibly a Marti report which mirror style was originally installed on the OP's truck. Also as you can tell from my NOS type 9 there are 2 slightly different mirror heads used on the type 9 assemblies. Note in a previous post that type 9 mirror head had a lip at the edge of the mirror head. Mine doesn't have that lip.
Also to the OP regarding your question on how to tell if your type 8 mirrors are original Ford mirrors. The only way to tell (that I'm aware of) is to look on the mirror head itself. It should have a Ford script name inside of the oval badge stamped into the stainless steel, or FOMOCO inside the oval stamped into the stainless steel.
What I can add to this thread is that the type 3 and type 11 mirrors utilize the same mirror arms and brackets. They just have different mirror heads and the type 11 were available in both stainless steel and/or white painted carbon steel. They painted style are becoming increasingly harder to find as they were mainly used on base model and work trucks and were prone to rust.
