The fewer people who vote the greater power of those that do.
I have three letters that say "voting is power":
NRA!
And five more:
ABATE!
Local elections are also an area where activism and voting have real impact, since especially in small towns, they are often decided by a small margin.
Americans that display activism instead of whining get results.
Vote in concert with a lobby of your peers, and you can get some of what you want.

Same in this country. If you ever become involved in politics, especially at the national level, you'll see how the system actually works. While there are some good people seeking public office, a majority has their own agenda, normally business or power advantages. In most every case (there are upsets), belonging to an established party provides the manpower and all-important money to run for office. The major US parties are split evenly, and voter turnout always averages about 50% of eligible voters. That's where the money comes in. Most general elections are decided by no more than about a 10% majority, more often closer, as evidenced by our last general election. All politicians are after the swing vote, and campaign state by state, because that's what wins or loses elections. Assuming there are no major differences between the candidates, the one who spends the most money for national TV advertising stands the better chance of winning after implanting whatever works into the brains of enough non-thinking people through repetitious ads that stay in place at the voting booth.
If you want to change things, you'll have to start a grass-roots program never before seen in this country, register those people too apathetic to exercise their right to vote and, as Clinton put it, offer them a better deal. I'm personally too old to care about changing the system and have most of what I want by keeping track of what they're been up to and planning accordingly, so good luck with your goals.

I think a 3rd party (however impossible in my lifetime) is the potential solution. I'm talking about a radical changes ( tax code, drug policy, immigration, etc.) kind of candidate though, not just another lying Dem/GOP clown.
Libertarian Harry Browne comes to mind.
If you think that's a joke then it proves the point. We'll never have a viable 3rd party, just more of the same donkey-elephant BS.
Carpe_diem please vote anyway, they (pols) don't care if we think they're stupid, they just need more of the people who do vote to reelect them, in the lessor of two evils sham our democracy is.
