I'm new to the forms so hopefully I'm doing this right. I have rust in my gas tank and am wondering what some of yall are doing to get it cleaned out. Thanks
Usually it’s gonna take some kind of acid inside the tank to dissolve the rust and flush it out. Not an impossible job.
youtube has a few how-tos on the subject.
I used cheap vinegar on my motorcycle tank. You could probably do the same using 4-5 gallons of white vinegar or “cleaning” vinegar. (It’s got to be repeated 3 or 4 times so save the poured-out vinegar, strain it and repeat).
Welcome to the forum. Rusty gas tanks are a common problem in our trucks all across the years. You can try to clean it and de-rust it, (keep in mind your contaminated chemicals become hazardous waste after you're done sloshing them around in your tank, how will you dispose of them properly?) but in most cases the efforts are futile. If you're constantly having to clean filters or rebuild carbs because they have junk in them, it's frustrating at the very least, and can be down right inconvenient or worse if your truck leaves you stranded. New tanks are available and not overly expensive in the big picture, especially compared to the hassle with chasing fuel delivery issues or a tow bill. Don't forget the fuel line from the tank to the carb will likely look just like the tank and should be changed, too.

X2
And if you look into a tank to the floor of the tank and it looks good it still could be rusty on the top.
I will not tell you how I know this
Go with new tank(s)
