My first rebuild at 57 years old. I have hooked a hose to vacuum advance. I'm havering a little problem with getting the idle down to where it doesn't jerk into gear. I have my timing at 22* BTDC. I can reduce the timing but then the truck doesn't excelerate and bogs. My first rebuild.

Need to put a vacuum gauge on it. If you don't have one they are inexpensive. Should not have to be at 22 BTDC. 10-14 is normal.
Still have point ignition? Is it a stock cam? Have you verified #1 piston is at TDC when pointer is at 0 degrees on balancer?
Are you 100% you have the timing marks lined up correct during assembly.
I am not a engine builder but I tend to agree with mark8man that 22 degrees??
seems like something not lining up correctly
Hello again.
I did the rag over the carburator and it died. I would assume I don't have a vacuum leak.
I'm bouncing back and forth from the electrical wiring nightmare to trying to get my timing to where it slows down the idle.
My project is a 1975 F250 with the 390fe.
