Pull cab or engine/trans first?

In the process of getting my ‘79 F150 4x4 Auto down to the frame. First time pulling a cab and engine. Is it easier to pull one before the other? I was planning on pulling the engine and trans together. I’ll take any and all advice.

I have the front clip/radiator and bed off.

I would say cab first. Nothing in the way to pulling engine and transmission straight up and out.

Cab for sure. Pulling the engine and tranny with the cab completely attached isn't even possible on the 67-72 trucks without unbolting the front cab mounts. I don't imagine it would be much better on the dents either. Pull the cab and then straight out with the drivetrain.

I just took mine down to the frame a few months ago. I pulled the cab first. Had zero issues and would do it again that way.

Great, thanks! I assumed it would be better to pull the cab first but didn’t know if I was missing something obvious.

Yep, cab first, the engine transmission and transfer case will not come out as one, either the transfer case has to come off, or the transmission and transfer case come off the engine.

Edit: With the dog house in place, if you remove the fenders and radiator mount (dog house) it will come out in one peice

Sounds like cab 1st as long as you do not have to move it fwd once it is up. How are you pulling it, tractor, eng hoist trick? Be careful not to bend your drip rails if lifting from the cab roof.

At least the F150 doesnt have the front cross member like on the highboys. With the cab off my 72, I had to pull the passenger wheel off and come over the side with my engine and tranny. I couldnt reach that far from the front with my hoist. Here is another easy way to pull your cab by yourself if you have too.

I plan on trying to use a hoist. Ive been putting it off in my mind for a bit because I’m pretty nervous about it. But I’m at the point now where it’s stopping me from progressing any further.

Well here are some fine examples on how to rig it. https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/1...l#post14696917

Use the seat belt attachment points for the rear. Are you pulling the doors to lighten it? Then maybe go around the the lower fwd corner cab and come in the lower fwd corners of the door opening and across for your fwd attachment point. Use chain or quality HD straps.
