Question slow initial shift

I have a 71 F250 w/360 and automatic 2 wheel drive. The problem/question I have is when you first fire up the rig.
When you put the transmission into reverse it goes right into gear. When you put it into drive it takes 30 seconds to a minute before it goes into gear. After it drives and warms up the problem goes away. What do I need to look into adjusting or repairing? Thanks for your help.

Sounds like your filter could be getting plugged up or a low fluid level. Make sure your vacuum line is still attatched to the modulator on the right side of the tranny to the back of the intake or carb.

At the modulator the little rubber hose was not tight so I repaired that. Fluid was good. It still have the hesitation at start. I guess the next step would be the filter? By the way thanks for the help.

Just drop the pan and it is underneath it. They pop in with an o-ring usually. New gasket and fluid and your on your way. My truck acted similar and it also took awhile to engage in gear at all on cold mornings. There is an adjustment on the modulator for when the tranny shifts and how hard it shifts. If you pull the vacuum line off the modulator, there is a screw you turn in or out to make it shift sooner and harder. Play around with this also. Good luck.

I have the same issue...

C-tranny geek friend of mine said this...

the low reverse lip seals are hard not applying the piston until fluid starts to warm up time for a rebuild..

and...

a c-6 isnot like a 727 c-6 have converter flow all the time hence why you can check the fluid level in ford and gm trans in park and chryslers in nuetal because they have no cooler flow when a converter drains back it is typically a manual valve problem wether it out of adjustment or the bores of the valve are just worn like chryslers do reguraly and will only make a few second delay till the converter is full again the complaint mike has is the inner lip seal wich is a oring on his trans is hard as a rock and leaking fluid by it until the trans starts to warm up hence (morning sickness) hope this helps..

Another C-tranny geek friend of mine tells me that there is no harm being done, if you can live with it, nothing is being ruin'd...

It's called morning sickness. Your seals have gone hard and it's just a matter of time before the rebuild. Try one of those tranny overhaul in a can stuff of your choice.
