Flareside/stepside exhaust options

Trying to decide on where I want my exhaust to exit. Any thoughts on side exit, rear exit or angled out? How does it sound (loudness, drone, etc), how does it look? Pictures will of course be welcome

Pulling ideas from my imagination: rear exit, side exit in front of the tire, under the step, angle out like original but tucked in close, or up under the bumper but exiting down.

Single side single exit in front of the tire is cheapest (no up over the axle bends). But some exhaust shops might NOT do that. Also depends on one single (2 in muffler and one out muffler) stock like set up.

Or 2 to 1 to muffler then back to 2 dual, same side exit or opposite. Aso 2wd or 4wd, crossmember and xfer case to work around.

Straight out the back can cause a drone sound, same for turndowns.

Sorry forgot some pics. Headers true duals all the way and same side exit.

I like straight out the back, with slash cut ends or behind the wheel side exit, angled down and back. Either way they gotta be tucked up tight to the body. Any turn down will resonate, try to exit at an angle away from the truck to minimize it. If its a reg cab short bed step side I say throw some side pipes on it...

Could cut holes in steps and run stacks up outside the bed at rear cab corners. Add handles for cold weather hand warmers. Like "Little Red Truck".

I once had exhaust dump ahead of rear wheels on a '70 402 Chevy CST-10 that had nice set of 4 alloy wheels, in a year's time I had a nice pair and a crappy pock marked heavily oxidized pair of wheels. I took it to Midas and they custom did a rear angle to the side dual exit. I also bought new wheels on the way home.

I bought a '72 Chevy short stepside, it had a 350, but my stepbrother had put short side dumps on it before he sold it to me. New chrome wheels came my way soon ... so I changed it to rear exit with turn downs before the step bumper, I used new turbo mufflers on it too. After a new grille, 350 LT-1, trans rebuild, paint and body work, front bumper ... he bought it back from me in May 1986.

My '77 Ford had exhaust dumping ahead of the rear tires when I bought it in late May 1986, had two shiney long red bullets under the frame rails (to show them off I guess) ... I bought it about 45 minute's drive away on a Thursday evening after work ... & on Friday I was at Dale's Muffler Shop early getting a whole new system put under it ($160 then), with turbo mufflers (but life warranty, and since then Dale has put a couple sets on it, just charging for labor or any needed pipes, but a few years ago I stopped letting him do that ... my conscience told me to) ending at the very rear 90* turn to the sides. A kid working part time cleaning up there wanted the nearly new looking take off bullets, etc ,.... a week or two later he had them on his old truck and soon I heard through the grapevine that he got a ticket. Funny thing was I was a Trooper and the previous owner was a city LEO across the mountain ... maybe the car lot I found it on put the red bullets under it? It was too damn loud ... and by state code, glasspacks are not considered as sufficient mufflers.

I liked Dodge's "Little Red Truck" ... but could not then afford one.

Know what? I should just grab a couple of cheapo tips and or fab up some tips like I'm thinking, and tape them in place to see how the exit would look like.

Oh, I forgot you wanted pictures too.

I like my chrome or polished stainless steel tips with a rolled edge. My Flareside:

I like my plain steel tips just exactly precisely cut square with a smooth belt sanded edge painted black. I have them turned 90 degrees to the side, with a turn down, and the ends are clamped to the pipe for easy adjustability.

It's a temporary bumper bar painted red so nobody walks into bumper brackets, I'm gonna put new bed sides and tailgate on it among other things, and paint soon I hope. I removed the bumper to mod, clean, and paint separately. Yeah, I know ... It's a Styleside.
