When I got my truck, one fuel level sender worked OK. Now the other has gone out. From what I understand, they're both 19 gallon tanks.
Rear tank reads correctly for the first half of the tank. Under half, the needle bounces around aimlessly.
Front tank always reads empty.
I started looking for fuel level senders and it looks like they are no longer available for the diesels. Has anyone tried repairing one instead of replacing it? What typically fails on it? I'm going to have the bed off to fix my cab corner, so that would be a really nice time to tackle it.
Rock auto has fuel sender units. Check that first. Rear sender has been out of stock on there for a while. I know because I've been watching for one. Just add yourself into the wait list and get the front one. Also before you buy them, check your grounds and wiring. Either the unit goes out or the grounds just need to be redone.

Hello to all in this thread (and beyond). I am needing a replacement sending unit for my 1991 7.3L IDI, 4x4, extended cab with E4OD. It is the front/side tank, which Ford calls M/S. Midship. I have the original owner's manual literature. There seems to be a discrepancy in capacities at various sites and with literature. Some places are referencing it as a 17 gallon, others 19 gallon, and owner's manual supplement, a 22 gallon tank. The old one has been tested. No less than 40 ohms, jumping up to beyond 200 ohms before what should be full.
At the end of the day, as long as I have the 'anatomically' correct one, I can bear with being a couple gallons off to the side of getting to the finish line. I'm just looking for insight/clarification from someone with experience.
They're both 20 gallons, if you fill to when it goes as high up as possible into the fuel fill hose as you can, where you can see it, but without spilling.
I bet they're officially listed as 19, if you filled the entire space with no air in ideal scenarios, that's probably where they got 22, but, 20 ish, you could fill a little more, but then it might be sloshing out.
For ordering new senders, with dual tanks, go for the 19 gallon senders.
Don't order from Gas Tank Depot, he doesn't actually have a fuel sending unit to sell you. I recently tried to order the same fuel sending unit and had to deny charges on my credit card.
