Rust hole in Frame and broken spring bracket.

Hello everyone. I recently purchased a 1987 F-250 and realized on major issue and I want to know if I can do the job or if I need to have someone else look at it. On the driver's side, right on the end of the frame, there is a large hole in the frame and the leaf spring bracket is being held in by the bed. I really like this truck and I think I can weld some 1/8" plate steel in where the hole is. I'm not sure how precise I need to be when drilling holes for the new bracket. I have photos of the hole and I hope someone wiser than me knows what to do. Many thanks

If i need to take a better photo please just let me know.

It's a parts truck. Frame is not safe for you, or anyone else on the road.
Where I live, if any frame work is done, the vehicle is automatically written off as salvage.

In my mind, that is not repairable.

Agreed. Parts truck or reframe if worth it...which I doubt. That amount of rot prob has destroyed the cab also.

I'm not afraid to weld on a frame, but the problem is that it's almost a certainty that's not the only problem. Maybe no other holes, but I guarantee you it's getting dangerously thin elsewhere too. By the time you stripped it all down and patched/reinforced every thin area, you'd be money and time ahead just getting a different truck. Also I'm guessing the sheet metal looks just as bad? Usually the body goes first..

But look on the bright side - you now have an entire running parts truck worth of spare mechanical, electrical, and interior bits!

If you are going to attempt a repair, do use metal thicker than 1/8". The factory HD frame is 1/4" thick.

Not only do you have sever frame issues, It looks as your missing a few leafs in your passenger side spring pack. Think You have more issues then you have noticed. Bummer. Always sucks when you buy a big bag of problems.

That was the second thing I noticed, broken leaf springs in the middle of the passenger side leaf pack.

The first thing I do when I go to look at old trucks is crawl under it and start looking at the frame, structural pieces, and driveline. If the frame is no good, the truck is useless.

Junk it. It sucks, I know, but it's really not worth the risk.

Well it's a good lesson to look under a vehicle from now on. There's no repairing that. Missing leaf springs also in rear left. What else is missing? Parts truck or donor.

Yeah, I don't mean to be a jerk, but this does seem like a lot of stuff to miss when buying a vehicle. I would've checked and seen this almost immediately.

Yeah, that is the shlts…

We were all 18 once, we all made mistakes. Hopefully you’re not in too deep, and you will learn from it, and worst case strip off any parts for your next truck. I’m going to assume you didn’t know any better, and someone took advantage of that. Hopefully they didn’t send you down the road in it…

Unfortunately, without seeing the rest of the truck, I’m going to assume it’s all pretty bad, metal and Mtce wise.

Any chance you know the seller? Or have any recourse on it? Maybe get your parents involved at this point. I don’t know what the deal was, but you might be able to get back out of it and return the truck (with a tow truck, don’t drive that thing). That’s a very slight maybe, but you never know depending on the circumstances of who and what the deal was, or what you were told.

Good luck with it,
