Hello all,
My 56 F250 has some rust issues between the rear leaf spring mount and the frame. The rust has eaten some of the metal behind the mount that is riveted to the frame. Can you cut and replace a section of the frame in this critical point? The rest of the frame is in great shape. Has any one run into this problem before and if so how did you fix it?
I don't see why not.
You could remove the bed for better access to the area.
Are you going to do the repair or a welding shop?
If me I would have a shop do the repair and the easier you can make their job I would think the less $$ for you.
Do you also need the spring mount as it may be paper thin once removed to do the repair.
Maybe replace the spring bushings / bolts when going back together?

How bad is "some rust"? If it"s just dimple looking and hasn't penetrated to deep ya might be ok for now, if it's rotted through then it's cut and replace for sure.....can you post a photo?
Thank you both for the fast reply's. Here's a picture of both sides. Sorry they're so large.
. I don't have any problems doing the repairs my self, just didn't know if you could replace a piece of the frame at the spring mount.
After removing the spring mounts and getting rid of the surface rust, you might be able to "sister" in a piece of angle iron to the existing frame. Again, depending upon further examination.

The mount does need to be removed and the area "cleaned" to see what you are dealing with.
From the pictures it does not look that bad but you need to pull it apart to get a better look at what you are dealing with.
Good luck and no issues on welding the frame.

If it is that bad on the flange I would expect it to be bad on the web too but you won't know until you take it apart. Regardless it is fixable but unless you are a structural welder you should over engineer it with doubler plates. Keep us updated what you find.
Gentlemen Thanks for the advice. Again I'm real happy to find there are no issues welding the frame at the leaf spring mounting point. I will most certainly over engineer the repair. It may be a little while before I can get to it but, I will report back with plenty of pictures.
