I should have been more clear, while coasting down a hill put the transmission in neutral and let the engine idle. If the vibration is gone it is engine or transmission input shaft related. If the vibration is still there it is transmission output shaft, u-joint, drive shaft, rear axle, or wheel balance. We can keep helping you narrow down what is the cause.
so my friend stopped by and diagnosed transmission as the source of vibration-and I either need to rebuild or replace it. I checked the gear oil and it was overflowing when I pulled fill plug. Out came about a pint of foamy chocolate brown fluid.
A T98 from a 48-52 might fit, but they are hard to find. T9s are giveaway transmissions and are (at least around here) surprisingly common. Vintage hot rodders want the half bell from the front of the transmission and have no use for the rest. The transmission is the same 1/2 ton to 2 ton with the exception of the rear bearing retainer / rear transmission mount. If you find a transmission in good shape from a different size truck you simply need to swap the rear retainer / mount.
T98s are nice for sure, I’m not sure what goes into swapping one into a pre 48’ though. I know on a F2/F3 frame the bearing retainer lifted the rear changing the angle of the engine. I do have a T98 bearing retainer stashed away in my attic somewhere, if you are interested PM me.
Out of curiosity did your friend say what was wrong with the transmission? Before anything I would pull the transmission floor panel and pull the top of the transmission off. Take a look inside, show us some pics too. Milkshake is not good but I’d be tempted to seal her up and throw some 90 weight in there and see what she does before jumping right into a transmission swap, pretty invasive procedure for a shined up rig like that.

I agree with Sam, the T9 is usually bullet proof unless it gets full of water, or is run dry. Let us know what is bad in the transmission.
Also, the rear bearing retainer Sam has must be mated with a 48-52 transmission, or of all things, a T98 out of some agricultural equipment (I got one from a Ditch Witch trencher).
The 48-56 forum currently has an example of T9 transmission demand. If you indeed do need transmission parts (or a whole transmission), maybe this could help: https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/1...l#post20169374
flatsoface, I usually hang out on the 48-56 forum. 38 coupe directed me to this thread.
My brother has two transmissions you may be interested in. He used to have a 53 F600 dump he used in his concrete business. Over the years he picked up flathead parts and extra transmissions. He is now selling a lot of his parts and is willing to sell these two trannys.
I read you bought your truck in PA and live in CT. My brother lives in Lancaster County, PA. If interested PM me and I can give you his phone number. Here are pics of the trannys.

When I had my 50’ F6 I had a T98 in it. I had a bearing retainer crack on me, I got paranoid and started collecting bearing retainers from various yards around me when I came across them. It’s my last one I’ve held onto in case I wanted to do another T98 swap, doesn’t look like it with this 47’.
Yeah - the more I isolate the vibration the less I think it is trans related now. It seems to be clutch/flywheel forward as in neutral you can really feel it revving up in the cabin. I hope it's not a motor vibration!?!?!

Are you interested? Let me know. The transmissions are near Lancaster PA, not far from the PA Turnpike.
Thanks, abe.
I am in CT now so not able to stop by and still trying to figure out the motor vibration/clutch?flywheel?
I rebuilt the carb and fuel pump as it was sitting for 2 years.
I found that the power valve was missing in the carb!?!?! Replaced it and added a filter to the glass bowl on the fuel pump.
fingers crossed it somehow helps with the vibration at high speed - not sure how but am anxious to get it running again to try it out.
