Good morning folks, as im perusing the forums I had a handful of questions on this gen of rigs. Nowhere near finished reading, but this is mostly opinion based anyhow.
5.0 v8, 6 speed v. 10 speed fuel economy, what are y’all getting?
how do y’all like it, for those at elevation especially when pulling?
Overall on the trucks, anything I should really be aware of and or prepared for?
Im fairly familiar with them, between being a body tech and a couple friends that have them. I know how the 2021 2.7 eb tows with a 8.5x18 enclosed behind it here in colorado, pretty nice compared to my ‘93 250. Not quite as naturally stable though.
2018 was the first year for the all new 5.0, which has little to nothing in common with the 2011-2017 engine. There were issues with oil usage that year, to the point that Ford issued a TSB about it.
the issue was mostly worked out by 2019, and I haven't really read much about it for 2020 or 2021s.

I have a '19 with 13,000 miles, the oil usage reared it's head around 4000k or so, then started to lessen after like 11,000. It's still not like my other trucks which consumed no oil but it's getting to a point where I'm not going to get anything done about it.
As far as buying used, my experience (and this is just me) is that no matter how good the truck seemed at time of purchase, I always discovered something that had I known about it I would't have bought the truck. I got tired of it and my last two have been new and flawless, I got 'em new, kept 'em in great condition, and they treated me well back. I'll only go new from now on.

Im kind of at that point where if I can swing it I will. I found a few new ones I liked, just wish they had the tow mirrors but thats whatever.
ill do some reading on the TSB for the 18 model year
In this crazy market buying used makes no sense at all to me. Just bought 22 350 6.7 extended long Lariat and while waiting I went to look at a couple on the lot I thought were new. 25 and 35,000 miles, 2019 and 2017, both more than I paid for what I ordered.
With the shortage of new trucks, used trucks of any real quality will be hard to find for a reasonable price. What's reasonable? Only the buyer can determine that.
When I bought my 2011 truck, I had my eye on a couple of used trucks and after comparing prices, miles, etc. I went new and have never been happier with a vehicle in my life.
With all that said, no matter what I got, I'd warranty the hell out of it.
Buying a used truck is like going to Vegas. Some are winners, most are not. I feel there is a difference in buying a used truck vs buying a used Toyota Camry. The anticipated wear and tear is higher on a truck imo. I also see countless dingalings that are the 'lease type', that are really hard on the trucks, knowing well that the warranty will most likely cover anything while they own it, were as I hope to own 10 years and feel I am less abusive and follow recommended maintenance better. This said, if I were to buy a used truck, I'd very much prefer to buy of the owner and not a car lot. You can tell and assume a lot from meeting the owner. Good luck, I hope you find a gem.
