AOD Interchangeability

I have a 1986 F150 with an AOD a transmission. I also have an AOD transmission from a 1988 Crown Victoria. Are these the same transmission? The only visible (to me) difference is the truck has a rear seal that extends away from the tail shaft housing and the CV transmission does not. The truck's transmission has "21" cast into the bell housing, the CV has "23". Thought maybe the truck's rear seal might be hiding a longer shaft or something.

Truck's transmission is fine. The CV transmission was claimed to be fine but is unvaried. My thinking is the CV transmission could be gone through and upgraded as a replacement.

Should I get rid of the CV transmission to get it out of my way? Or is it worth hanging onto?

Same transmission. There's literally no internal mechanical difference, or external mounting differences. I'd put the truck style output seal in it, and proceed.

The reason I ask about this is mostly because I would like to free up the space that the transmission occupies. If it's a direct bolt up, it might be a good idea to keep it.

So, I'll keep it for now. If someone knows for sure either way, direct bolt up or not, please do chime in. Even if you happen to run across this thread next year.

The only things to be aware of is that there are two different tail housing lengths (10-1/4" & 11-1/4") and two known speedo drive gear counts (7 teeth & 8 teeth) cut into the output shaft. Only way to change lengths and speedo counts is to dismantle the whole transmission and swap shafts.

They probably have different manual control levers, but those are easy to swap by dropping the valve body.

Here is what I know about AOD transmissions:

Every time I get another AOD I update that page, so it is a lifetime work in progress.

The two I have have the same length housing. Only the shaft seal is different. Could or different spline count be compensated for using a different speedo gear? I have no cruise.

I'm guessing these should look different and easy to differentiate.

All AODs have the same spline count (28).
Sometimes you can compensate by changing speedo gears and sometimes you can't.
Levers are radically different, so easy to spot.
