I'm sure this topic has been discussed at length but I wasn't able to find what I was looking for.
What I'm trying to fix is the truck seeming gutless. I know these trucks aren't the quickest but it can't get out of its own way empty. It was my father in laws truck and I'm playing catch up on some things.
The truck's bio is it's a 92 F350 with the 7.3 IDI and about 290,000 miles on it. A rebuilt E4OD transmission and stock axles I believe it's a 10.25 rear and Dana 60 front wit stock 4:10 gears. I've upgraded to an electric fuel pump, a gear reduction starter from DB electrical and SD front suspension which gave me enough lift to run military 37's.
This truck really isn't a daily driver but when driven does see speed up to 70 mph. So my question how much improvement could I expect with going to a 4:56 gear and would 4:88 be to much? I have no intention of adding a turbo or any other power mods. The truck just seems like it needs to be geared down but I have no experience with making those sort of changes.
4:56 or 4:88 gears will make 70mph your top speed bouncing on the rev limiter.
i have 4:10 gears with 37 inch tires and a C6 trans. and it is all i can do to hit 70 going downhill.
I think 4:88's will be too much but the 4:56's will give me the bottom end I'm hoping for. I'm sure the injection pump is contributing to the lack of power. I know these trucks aren't powerhouses but mine seems excessively under powered.
i doubt that changing gearing will increase get up and go but it will increase the noise
I do plan on replacing the injection pump before the gears if that gets the performance where I'm happy with it I'll leave the gears alone. But since I decided I'm going to just restore the truck, I'm trying to plan one step ahead of where I'm at. The transmission is done, the electrical as far as batteries and starter are done. Injection pump, injectors and fuel lines are next. After that I'm going to the axles replacing bearings, seals, brakes etc... figured since I'll be in there now is the time to start learning about pros and cons to choice in gear ratios.

Where did you come up with that info? The OP has an E40D transmission with a .71 overdrive, with 37 inch tires that puts him at about 2100 RPM at 70 mph with 4.56 gears and 2250 RPM with 4.88 gears, either way not even close to the rev limit.
real life. with overdrive the same truck had a top speed of around 85 mph.
without overdrive it tops out around 70.
raising gear ratio will be about the same as removing overdrive.

I have 37 A/T with 4:10 and the ZF5 and get up to 80+ pretty easy even on a 2% without going too high in revs. I try to keep it under 3k though
I can do slightly better in my DRW because better aero and the tires
I wouldn't go over 4.10s. Look at freshening the fuel system up and down the line a turbo if you want to wake it up. Ever had the timing set correctly? Good IP, injectors and timing and a NA with 4.10s and 37s will get up and go.
