Question Replace Instrument Cluster

I have a 92 F150 with the 4.9 and 5 speed manual. It has the "standard" instrument cluster without the tach. Of course I'd like to convert to the cluster with a tach. I found this on Ebay and wanted opinions on whether it would work.

The Ebay ad says it is a 94 automatic V8. Will any of that matter for my 92 manual I6?

Thanks. Jim B.

You shouldn't (99% sure) have a problem swapping out the instrument cluster. I believe that all gauges for 92-96 are interchangeable, and Ford has all the wiring already in place. It's basically just plug-and-play; take the gauges you need off the new one and install them onto yours.

There was a change in wiring for the voltmeter somewhere around 1994. You may have to study the wiring for both clusters and harnesses and do some minor rewiring.

You'll probably want to take the center speedometer out of your old cluster and put it in the new one. This way you'll keep your original mileage reading.

As for being from an automatic, you can replace the PRND21 plate with the black one from your old cluster.

Rewire?

I really don't want to have to do any "rewiring". I'd just rather buy the correct cluster and plug-and-play. On that note, any suggestions on where to get a 92 cluster (with tach) at a resonable price? Thanks. Jim B.

www.car-part.com should steer you in the right direction for the cluster. its best to get a cluster the same year as your truck (Example: Where the 1992 has a Fuel Reset Light on the far left of the idiot light row, in the 1994 that is an Airbag light instead, and the wiring is on the opposite side of the cluster from where a 1992's would be. Also, the tach came in 2 different vareieties, one for the 6 cyl and 1 for 8 cyl, so they are different. Find a cluster at a yard, and use your existing odometer in the new cluster. Should cost about $100.

Just FYI:

You can't transfer the gauge panels (except the speedo) between non-tach and tach clusters.

The tach is the same for 6 and 8 cylinder engines. There is just an extra wire grounded for one (don't remember for sure which). So a factory tach will automatically be accurate.
