LED headlight fans

So while wiring in some upfitter switch stuff last weekend, I noticed my headlight fans were running. I now realize it may have been normal, but it was very weird at first. Does anyone know when/why they would run? It seems to be whenever I unlock the doors, they start. But I don't know how long they'll run for.

Good chance it was. The fan is mounted down below the headlight in a small box. Put your head right up near them and listen. Freaked me out because the first time I heard them I was ***** deep in wiring the plow and I thought I screwed something up. Still haven't connected the plow itself, so its still possible that I did.

Those raptor lights look nice.

I've got projector headlights, my wife has the same projectors, but HID. The HID only makes it whiter, not brighter. We both agree that the light output looks the same when driving, but yellower, warmer. I'm fine with them.

I didn't know LED lights had fans. I'm glad to know that. That will further dissuade me from getting them as an option.

The more you know.

Move into the 21st century. These LED’s are the best! That’s why Ford is getting away with robbery if you get them. Lariat, Lariat Ultimate, then add the lights. This is the minimum price to get them.

I don’t see a huge problem with all the factory leds across multiple manufacturers. I’m sure they all have fans, so to make out like it’s a week spot is probably not valid. But if your a roll up window kinda guy then yes, the more tech The more that can go wrong. Even the basic of models now have more sensors and computer reliant tech than 20 vehicles from the 70’s.

so no escape.

this is my first set of leds. Kinda like them. Definitely like the cargo and puddle leds.

no need to defend LED's. The selling point has typically been efficient light output. But it sounds like they aren't there yet in automobiles, if they need fans to cool down massive amounts of heat. Not to mention the white light they produce makes depth perception more difficult. It's a fact.

I'll keep my yellow projector headlights for a long while. They can keep asking premiums for the LED's. It will come full circle again I'm sure, once the novelty wears off.

Kinda like how "they" have continued to force dohc engines on us, when pushrods still have a job to do. There is a future for incandescent light, practically. The politics could get involved again like Obama did when he banned them. They have uses. No need to discard them.

That's the problem with progressivism, it causes people to think that the new stuff completely replaces the old, and that their is no place for the old anymore, when that just isn't the case. And that isn't a political statement, that is a statement to how humankind often leaps away from one thing and to another, when there is a place for both to exist.

I deplore liberalism but to say they own the push into led tech is incorrect. Performance is the push. I would never revert back to incandescent or halogen work lights, flashlight and headlamps. No comparison. I know some people pickup light spectrum s differently but I’m absolutely good with it. Not really used this truck at night but I’ll see. Everything that produced photons makes heat. You can cook with a 500 watt halogen.

The fans are not an indicator that LEDs are "not there yet" for automobiles. All LEDs generate heat. It is not the LED themselves but the electronics that drive the LEDs. Ever touch the base of a household LED? It will nearly burn your fingers. Larger output LED bulbs (300W and greater equivalent output) typically have a finned aluminum base to conduct the heat away from the electronics. Generally there is enough free space around the bulb that conductive cooling is adequate to protect the bulb's electronics. In a vehicle the placement of the headlights means the ambient air can be hot from the engine so fans help move the air and extend the life of the electronics.

LEDs are more efficient in generating the same level of light as an incandescent. Sure many of the old things still have uses. We once used candles to light our homes. I don't think there are many of us who would want to go back to candles being the primary lighting source, but we still use them. Horses were widely used for transportation and work but your push rod engine changed all that. Some still use horses, and I have two of them, but I don't want to use them to get to the store. The incandescent bulb is going to slowly fade away like the candle.

The government mandate for reducing the use of incandescent lights pushed us to a more efficient light source which in turn significantly reduced the cost of the bulbs and energy used. To me, that is a rare success story.

There is a lot wrong with your post, but I'll just address this one aspect.

The absolutely ridiculous war on incandescent lights did NOT reduce the cost of light bulbs. At all. And I know that as a fact, as I've bought thousands of dollars worth in my capacity at my job, as well as my home usage. These little bad boys started showing up everywhere:

And they are absolute junk. They melt, and they don't even last as long as incandescent bulbs. They are a fire hazard. They cost 10x what the incandescent bulbs cost. The plastic base has melted on very many of these that I've personally seen in service.

That isn't exactly what I said either. So there's that.

Incandescents were never banned. Obama set a minimum Energy Efficiency Level, and incandescent lights had to be improved to be allowed, which they DID. You can buy new incandescent lights that are much more efficient than they were before Obama set the level.
