The guy you want to talk to is Don Hampton of Hampton Blowers, he has a 6-71 setup for the 390-428 that has the correct intake spacer (2") so you can run a factory style distributor. This also makes the blower sit 2" higher, so it looks awesome. i got a price on one from him about 3 -4 years ago for one of my pro street cars and it was 2950.00 less carbs.

you guys are also talking about using CNC this, modern that, etc... against the stock SOHC engine. how about ported cammer heads? the engine was rated at 657hp, but the horsepower curve was still climbing when they stop the graph if it's the one I heard of...

I think that the intakes on a 427 SOHC head with a full port job would be hard to outflow but the exhaust is where most problems are run into with any of the older heads. They can be ported to flow good but I think the aftermarket can be made to flow much better here.

FE427TP,

Sure, we could take a VERY expensive, and basically non-existent set of Cammer heads and then spend more money and carve 'em all up, making an unmolested set even harder to come by, and get more power (maybe). But that wasn't really the point. My point was just that it's not necessary. Any 427 enthusiast can have cammer performance next week, at a reasonable cost, and if they pull a valve, or chew up a chamber, big deal, repair the aluminum or buy a new one.

I will say that I have one reservation however, and the reason I said maybe. What good does it do me to have a 450 intake on a hogged out cammer when I just cant get over about 200-220 on the exhaust? This was my reason for selling my TPorts. The new aluminum heads from any of the 3 manufacturers (soon to be 4)have a much better exhaust than the factory heads.

Also, what was the comression ratio on the tested SOHC? Wanna bet it was over 12:1? If I'm correct. Then we need to be comparing apples and apples, and the SOHC would need to be putting out around 850 to be competing with current FE's being run by some of the guys on the other forum. Sure, it can be done, but it would be a tremendous expense just to prove a point. Why. Nobody doubts the potential of a TPort, or Cammer. They were THE solution in their day, and certainly not to be disrespected now, it's just that we have other, more practical tools at our disposal today to rough up the bowtie crowd.

The only reason I can think of to bear the expense is the Cool factor. TPorts and Cammers are COOL! They are rare. They are the bad boys we all grew up wanting. The guys who use them will always have that in their corner, and you can't buy that at the corner store.
