Recently, last couple days Ive drivin my truck with a 390 its made this knocking noise which I'm pretty sure it isn't my rods or mains, it sounds like maybe the fuel pump arm is getting slapped by the cam thing? Its not a continous noise, it shows its face for a minute or so then goes, it happens at idle. Any ideas??
You have the same possible mysterious "noise" that the 390 I have acquired DID have. I pulled it from a friends 68 galaxie because it had a "knock". I was given the motor just to get it out of the way. I pulled it apart, found NOTHING wrong with it. I cleaned it up and put it back together. It runs like a top. It even has a 6-71 huffer bolted to it now(all stock guts-except cam).
To this day I dont know what was causing the noise. It was there, I heard it.
You're right rat. The fuel pump arm can become worn and slap on the cam eccentric. That's common and the first thing I'd check. Be sure you do though, because the consequences if it's not the fuel pump aren't that good, if you get my drift.
Could also be excessive thrust bearing clearance but this isn't usually a problem with automatic trucks. I have seen the converter bolts smack the engine plates before from too much clearance.
Got another one for you. I haven't seen it on a Ford yet though. I worked on a chevy tonight that had a knock. Turned out to be the starter gear bouncing off the flywheel. Most noticable at idle.
Do you have an aftermarket(holley) fuel pump? These things are notorious for making a racket, especially if it's the street/strip variety. I pulled the top end of my 428(in a mustang no less) apart , thinking something was seroiusly wrong, and it turned out to be that darned holley pump.
The noise is still gone, and hasn't come back even after a 200 mile pedal to the metal drive with 3500+lbs in the back I think everything will be all good. Thanks for the suggestions if anything does go wrong...
