i have a 02 crew lariat 7.3 psd, and i need an suv. i am undecided on whether to op for the excursion or the expedition. does anyone that has an expy have any regrets? dito for the excurs?
i want the diesel but i live in northern ohio and hear horror stories about diesels not starting if you let them sit during work or a movie, i know that you plug them in at night. it is for the boss (wife) and i do not want the phone call that the excursion won't start etc.

First of all, don't worry about a diesel not starting when cold. That problem went away over 10 years ago. I've had new diesels sit on the lot in constant zero-degree weather for a week, and start on the first turn of the key, no block heater plugged-in.

The main thing you have to consider with a diesel is this: can you justify the initial purchase price? A brand-new diesel is going to cost you about $7,000 MORE than a gas-powered engine. I've always figured you have to drive AT LEAST 20-25,000 miles/ year to justify that extra up-front cost, and then the better mileage of the diesel will pay off in about 6 years. If you drive any less than that- well, that $7,000 buys an AWFUL LOT of gasoline. Keep in mind, too, that the 6.0 Powerstroke takes 15 quarts of oil every oil change, and the special oil filter cartridge it requires is about 40 bucks.

Of course you have to weigh the increased purchase price with the higher resale value, so the overall financial picture may not be as bad.

The more significant question is: Where will you be driving it? Excursions don't mesh too well with urban environments, particularly when parking garages come into play.

yea i did the calc's and it is better to get the expy just i love my 7.3 psd!!!! i really can't see spending 7k for the diesel and a suv the size of my 250. plus i guess it would be easier for the wife to drive here in the cleveland area. the only nice thing that had me considering the excurs was the fact that i can get "A" plan prices!!! so it worked out to be a 9000 dollars off of msrp on a limited 4x4 6.0 excurs, not to mention the rebates and credit card credit. but the wife rather have the expy, too bad there is no limited all black one
