Decking the 400

How unorthodox is it to deck the block to achieve a good piston to deck distance? Also how much can safely be taken off a 400 block? Are there any drawbacks to decking more? I am aware of the need to also machine the intake manifold.
just trying to look at all available options.

Thanks in Advance

You could deck the block as much as you want really. The only drawbacks are like you say possible manifold fit problems as well as changing the preload in the valvetrain. From what I've seen factories don't control deck height all that closely and some blocks might be significantly taller than other ones. If you cut too far you'd have to use a gasket from Cometic to jack the heads back up again.

Decking the block to get the deck square with the crank centerline and at 90 degrees from the other deck is a great idea.
Detroit machine work wasn't intended for race engines, rather for grocery getters and family vacation haulers.

Decking the block to get the piston closer to the deck will cost you surprising amounts of money, unless you own the shop.

I'd suggest keeping the stock or blueprint deck and spending the $$$ on Tim Meyer's pistons. UNLESS YOU ARE INSTALLING CLOSED CHAMBER HEADS!

I've had blocks where one side was .020 higher than the other side how well do the pistons work out in that situation?

A good machinist is always going to want to deck the block about 10 thou at least
If you go much more than that is when you run into manifold bolts not fitting and lifter preload being incorrect
The lifter plunger will no longer be in the center of the bore
Do it
More compression
More power
