Welcome to FTE!

4x2 or 4x4?

You pull the stick, lower things via disconnecting mounts, and probably removing your crossmember.

Unbolt it and move it straight back.

A good floor jack will help, lots of blocking, and you can support it from above as well. In fact pulling the entire access panel out of the floor will make everything easier.

You have a good place to work on this or are you in the mud with a penlight and a crescent wrench?

If you plan to remove the shifter, make sure you have a T18. The removal process is different for a NP435. I've never removed the shifter. I just lean the tanny over as I'm rolling it out. I jack up my truck and set all four tires on top of 6x8 inch landscaping blocks to give me more room.

If reinstalling the tranny, consider making two "slide pins" by cutting the heads off two bolts and threading them into the bottom of the bell housing. Cut a slot into the the top of each bolt in case you want to use a screwdriver to remove them after the tranny is in place. These "slide pins" help guide and slide the tranny back into place.

The link below is a good source of info and parts on these trannies.

My cab was stripped of everything and the door on my 4x4. Engine was already removed as well. I hooked on to my trans with the engine hoist, unbolted it, removed cross member and lowered it down to a dolly. Rolled it out with the stick in it.

If you do remove the stick and it's housing, make sure the tranny is in "neutral" first. The stick can be removed separately. But you didn't mention why you want to remove the tranny. If it shifted fine but needs a new clutch, only the stick needs to be removed. Unless you take the advice above If you had shifting issues inside the tranny and not the clutch, then you should remove the stick and it's housing. Then check the nylon "shoes" on the tips of the shift forks.
