Is there a difference in the V10 over the years. I've always stayed away from the first year production of an engine so the manufacture could work out the bugs. Now I have the chance to buy the V10 and wondering if I should stay away from the 99.

1) How did Ford incerese the HP from 1997 to 2004? Was it internal, computer programming changes or what?
2) What was the HP of the V10 in 1997. The 1ST year.
3) In 1997 did Ford use the same frame etc. on the one ton 2x4 truck as it did on the Econoline one ton Van?
TIA

Make sure you get at least a 2000. I have a '99, my sister has a 2000, big difference in power. Both trucks are stock, same gears, cab, tires, 4x4, everything. The newer truck motor has a plastic intake, totally new induction setup, different heads, and different spark plugs, as well has some other minor changes. I wish I had known this when I bought mine last January. As far as the exhaust it looks the same as mine is. The exhaust tone is a lot more mellow and even sounds more powerful and throaty. Good luck!

One caveat to this, the 98 E-350 for some reason slipped through with excess horsepower/torque. It had something to do with how the y- pipe was designed and how the motor was set in the frame, but if you ever find one of these rare beasts offer the owner triple what the Kelly Blue Book says it's worth, even if it's not for sale, and it probably won't be as the owners of these secret vehicles know the factory's mistake and are out driving around with a huge $*&^-eating grin on their face. So if you come up next to a guy in a Ford van, with V-10 badges, and he's looking at you out of the corner of his eyes, and has this HUGE smile on his face, JUST LET HIM BE. DO NOT TRY TO ENGAGE HIM IN A SPEED CONTEST. JUST IDLE AWAY OUT OF THE LIGHT, YOU WON'T GET A SECOND CHANCE,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,BWAHAHAHAHAHAHA !!

Thanks
Yes, the V10 has evolved over time. But I might consider the redesign of the heads as a possible reason to stay away from 2000's and 2001's. I realize the chance of spark plugs launching are small, but if it is so insignificant, why'd they redesign em and why not get the newest design just to be safe. Other reasons to stay away from 99 models "are" not "is" the Dana 50, smaller lower trac bar mount (not allowing you to properly run an aftermarket adj. trac bar) for starters......
I have a 99' v10 and am not sweatin' the extra 35 ponies the 00' to 04's are puttin' out... I'm waiting patiently for a swap of the next generation v10 due out this year or next
