Hey guys! Bear with me because this is my first post on here.
Here is what I got:
2005 E-450 with the v10 6.8
87k miles
Started off as a light ticking noise but nothing too bad, honestly thought it was just lifter tick. It didn’t seem to cause any issues except for the noise and didn’t get progressively louder but now while driving up a hill, it went from a minor tick to a proper knocking sound coming from the driver side around the oil pan. I have a feeling it is a spun bearing but wanted to ask if anyone has had similar issues/tips for resolution? My hope is that maybe it’s a cracked flywheel or flex plate as that would not warrant a potential engine rebuild. I don’t have the tools or time because this is on our RV so it will likely have to be a shop job.
I already have looked at the common problems, all the plugs are still there, no CEL, exhaust manifolds look fine, and the idle is not rough at all and no noticeable loss of power.
The noise happens on idle but it’s not too noticeable and then around 1500-2500 rpm it’s pretty loud and then get quieter as we increase rpm. Also, when we apply power while driving, it goes away and the engine otherwise sounds fairly healthy. It’s like there is a sweet spot on the throttle where it’s super loud and then goes away.
Well we took it to a dealership just to see about diagnosis and the engine seized right as we turned into the dealership lot and blocked the entrance. Current recommendation from them after finding metal shavings in the oil is to get a new motor. But I have now had the chance to do some research about shops and found some good mom and pop shops. Going to figure out pricing. Thanks for the input everyone!
This place is called "The Engine Builders" they are in Glendale, Arizona, so you would probably have to ship them the truck, or trailer it... People send them trucks, vans, etc all the time. If you were within 100 miles they usually offer free pickup on their own flatbed but your well out of range of that.
I had them pick mine up, i was about 50 miles from them at the time, when it was done, i went and got it and drove it home purring like a kitten.
If you call, talk to the owner if he is available, they know a lot of modular motors, they do a high volume oil pump, felpro for all the gaskets, new water pump, boring 030, peaning and rebuilding the heads, new pistons and rods, and an entire list of other stuff all included in that price, their mantra is do do it once, do it right.
I had them timesert all 10 of my spark plug ports while they were doing it also, to prevent any plugs from ever blowing out. Quite easy to do when the heads are already off and torn apart.
Thank you so much! I’m going to give them a ring and see what can be done! Hoping the amount saved from not going with dealership can offset the cost of getting it towed there.
Tell them the guy with the big V10 police excursion, that they painted the motor red and blue sent you. They also paint the motor, give them some color choices if you want, otherwise they will do it all black or some such.
I did Ford Red for Valve covers, and oil pan, ford blue for everything else. came out schweet, check the link in my signature for pics.
