Lightbulb Arnrey ole Distributor

Good evening all. A couple weeks back I had to repl. the harmonic balancer. NAPA balancer is marked but all painted black. I tried yellow markers but didn't show up under the strobe. I "borrowed" some whithe fingernail polish and marked 0/10/20. Marks show up good now and looks to be 6 or 7 BTC with spout out. Truck running good. But I wanted to set the timing to what I have learned is to be 10 BTC. I loosen the nut on clamp to rotate dist. and NO GO. I even took a piece of 1x1 and lightly taped near the base on a rib and again NO GO. So am I wrong but I thought it was supposed to rotate to adjust spout out timing. The outward condition is very clean, no rust or visible reasons for it not to move, AT ALL. Any ideas or experience with this would be helpful. I swear I have not got out the pipe wrench yet.

No, you're doing it right. It's not impossible for the distributor shaft to get stuck. I'd get some penetrating oil on the base of it, before you go taking a pipe wrench to it.

Try getting the engine up to temp, be sure to use PB Blaster, Liquid Wrench, or some suitable penetrating liquid. Then try tapping it with some force. Heat is your friend.

Thanks guys. I'll take it step at a time before the angle grinder gets plugged in. I had just thought I was missing a step some where.

Thanks guys. I'll take it step at a time before the angle grinder gets plugged in. Never had one do this before, thought I might be missing some hidden dowel pin on the back side or something like that.

No, it's aluminum sitting on cast iron for a decade or more. (anti-seize is your friend)

Some cat here a few years back did everything under the sun & eventually put a chain around it & employed a engine hoist. (7.5 I think)

Came out. Unusable, but it came out.

There is a fine line here. It runs okay i presume? May not be worth trying to get those last few degrees. If you snap the distributor off it may be more work than you bargained for.

BE CAREFUL! If you break your distributor you will wish you had left it alone. I would suggest spraying it with PB Blaster every day with the engine warm and lightly tapping the base with a brass punch and hammer until it breaks loose.

I soaked it with PB's finest, last night, again this am, ran it 15 mile round trip, soaked it again,, loosen clamp,, used a 1/2 rebar with 3lb. maul backing up onto it. Nothing,,, Found my 1" creasent and couldn't get it to crack loose,, of course I'd have to remove nearly the whole front clip to get my cheater pipe involved. I will stay after the PB juice diet daily for a while but I'm thinking I could be in a world of hurt if I get "Kinky" or real serious. Spout out 6-7 BTC spout in at warmed up idle right on 10,, So Ya'll are correct,, don't fix what ain't broke,, I'll be needin that $$$ to start in on the brake job before long. On top of all that my 1 year old EGR is stuck closed again,, had it off about a week ago and the plunger would not move up from the bottom. Cleaned it out with carb cleaner, got it moving freely, re attached the dang thing and today OBD1 throwin codes like spit *****. Short of replacing that again, any ideas on what to use for cleaning that out better. Then there's the Harley,, TC88 with 31k and chain tentioners almost gone,, there's another 1.5k to do the correct up grade,,, S--t,, I'm getting tempted to trade the both of them in for one of those electric bicycles.

PB Blaster - ha! You won't get anywhere with that. If you want to get it loose, soak it in a 50/50 mix of ATF and acetone. It worked for me!

BTW it's "ornery".

If it ever happens to me, it'll be penetrant, heat & yeah, engine hoist with rope/straps and much tapping with hammer.

Once loaded, a little rotational torque. Don't have to go overboard to get results without damage.
