Timing Questions

The TFI module went bad on my 89 F150 4.9, but it ended up being a module, distributor, cap, rotor, plugs, and coil type of job. The new distributor of course didn't have my alignment markings on it and now the truck won't start because the timing is so far off. It has air, fuel, and spark but will only crank, not turn over. My question was about the distributor alignment and the timing marks. Which way does the distributor itself face? Does the connector on the TFI module face the rear of the truck or is it more paralell with the radiator? And also, about the timing marks. In the Haynes manual it gives the timing marks as a few lines on the cover, but the marks on the passenger side of my truck have a bunch of teeth and one large notch cut out. Is that notch 10 degrees BTDC or is it TDC itself? Thanks very much in advance for your help.

On both the F-series in my sig, the connector on the dizzy was roughly parallel to the radiator, on the front side.

The notch on the crankshaft pulley has nothing to do with timing. There are marks that are easily obscured by light surface rust. The triangular pointer on the top side of the pulley, attached to the block is your reference. #1 cylinder is passenger side, front of the truck.

If you pulled your dizzy and other things, the best thing you could do now is set everything at TDC (top of compression stroke)--#1 piston and rotor, then go from there. Make sure you disconnect the SPOUT connector when you set the timing once you get it running.

jroehl has the answer. you can also pull #1 plug and put a drinking straw; long pencil etc in to help find TDC (when the most of straw is poking out). then position dizzy to put the rotor under (or closest to) the #1 point of the distributer cap. this should get it started for timing.

or you could do the tooth by tooth trial and error method I used once (not recommended unless you want to practice your cuss words and have a really well charged battery).
