Started bodywork on my 56. Blasted and sanded off at least 6 coats of old paint and got it all to bare metal. Got some metal prep and self etching 2K primer (mfg by 5 Star). I don't have a great deal of paint experience (mostly old tractors, trailers and the like) but I have never used any high build primer. When I sprayed this stuff it had a very rough texture. I realize I will need to block sand but is this rough texture normal? I adjusted air pressure and paint flow. I even tried reducing and spraying on some old scrap metal just to see if that would give smoother consistancy. I'd appreciate any advice you might have. Thanks
Thanks Carlene... I "borrowed" a 2 quart glass mixing bowl from wife so I could insure an accurate mix of primer and hardner. (I am still paying for that little stunt!!) I will try another can of hardner. Thanks again.
Thats what self ecthing primer does. Its supposed to mainly cover rust and finish rough. It would be best to block sand and then apply a primer surfacer, which would be sanded with fine grit 400 and apply the top coat
I'm not trying to be funny as I don't have a clue BUT why would you want to cover rust and end up with a rough finish? I thoght the high fill was supposed to fill small imperfections and have a self leveling feature.
