What this forum really needs is an app. This would improve the site in three ways: Bring in more traffic, allow more interaction, & improve the use for mobile users. Implementation of this would not be difficult & I'm sure would quickly make a return.
That's my .02,
What do y'all think?
Personally I'm fed up to the eyebrows with "apps" and hope to high hell "apps" DO NOT become so much a part of this site it becomes borderline ridiculous and insane. Then again I prefer actually speaking to people via telephone or face-to-face so there's that..........
I'm okay without an app. There are too many apps out there for things that used to be - and often still are - in browsers. I can't really see what it would get me except to know that my location and various other telemetry will be available to FTE and whoever they worked with on the app creation.
We used to have an app called Garage Talk for our network, but we've stopped servicing and supporting it for many years now. We have no plans to update or create a new one.

I do agree there are a lot of garbage apps that exist. I suppose most people on here are desktop users. For me and others always on the go, instead of time to sit down, I figured it would improve the format and make responding easier. It's just light hearted talk, was curious what thoughts on it were.

Understood and I hope you didn't take offense to not receiving an overwhelming (so far) agreement to your idea. As you mention I am a desktop user, make a special effort to NOT take the internet with me outside the home. I'd never use an "app" and honestly it would be a huge distraction from my daily doings.
FTE does a good job IMHO and for now it suits my approach to internet usage--if they thought or come to feel an "app" would benefit the site I'm positive they'd implement something.
The few times I do access this site on my phone, I always click the desktop version so that it looks and acts the same as when I'm home. I can't stand app based versions, they do not show all the content available on desktop, namely ones signature which can go a long way when someone needs help with something.
I tend to type a lot of details when I'm helping out here. Doing that on a phone or tablet soft-keyboard would be a pain and take a lot of time. If they develop something where I could easily and accurately dictate instead of typing then I'd jump on that. I bet that's at least half a decade away.

I've long, long advocated people seeking help NOT rely on signatures or avatars to convey information that is best when made part of an opening post. I disable signatures because they're IMHO boring and muck up a thread's readability (sp?) Not everyone agrees which just goes to show one size does not fit everyone here.
Another reason I don't do these "apps" is nearly every bit of helpful information, links and/or photos I'd post are on my desktop. There's no way I could or would retrieve such information from a "smart phone".

When somone comes on and says my truck don't run right and leaves it at that, how is someone going to even begin to know what they're driving? That's where adding that info to the signature comes into play, see my signature as an example, the first line, 7 words or so, would give the person responding to the op's question everything they need to know to begin to formulate an answer accurate enough to help diagnose an issue.
Most times an issue can be determined simply by knowing common issues for a certain year, make, model of vehicle with other parameters such as gear ratio, engine size and even the trim level as not all vehicles even in the same line have the same issues. These are questions that can all be answered by simply adding them to the signature.
Now obviously "My truck don't run right" Isn't enough info to go on but we at least know what they're driving. Knowing that information is key to diagnosing a concern. Having to ask someone what they drive gets annoying after the thirteen millionth time and prolongs getting to the bottom of the problem.
The signature in this case isn't for the person asking, it is for the person answering.

Arguing pertinent information is always contained in a signature AND that "everyone" has their display preferences set the same is NOT a good reason or explanation why not including pertinent information in the opening body of a help request post is more helpful than a signature line. I ask again when someone chooses to disable those what then--20 questions wrestling needed information from the OP?
Why do I need to dig for information that's helpful to the one asking? If I want help I'll give others as much information as I can in order to make it easy for them---I expect the same from those I'm trying to help.
The answer to your question how is someone to know what's under repair is for the one asking to include that information in the opening post and not rely on something thought to be part of everyone's user profile here. Its just simple etiquette IMHO.
