FWIW, I've seen both sides of the back pressure argument on the interwebs. My experience with a stock 6.0 was that I didn't suffer any ill effects when moving to a 4" downpipe from the restrictive crushed stock downpipe that my X came from the factory with. When I purchased it, there was no CAT and no muffler. Monitoring with an Edge CTS, there was a small amount of back pressure even with the straight (4") pipe.
Currently, and it's really apples to oranges, my stock ish 5.9 with a non VGT turbo, 4" straight pipe, I don't actually experience much turbo lag except at the very bottom end. And I can get it to spool pretty quick if I put my foot in it. ~32psi max boost and regularly get 20 psi going through the gears.
As to the OP, my opinion would be to go with a muffler. We all know what happens when the better half gets irritated.

I agree with running a muffler for sure. A straight through muffler won't hurt much of anything performance wise, however a baffled muffler will. Ford even used straight through design mufflers stock on some turbo diesels.
I run a straight through design muffler on all my stuff. Heck on my F250 Cummins conversion project I'm running two straight through mufflers in series (mostly because the stock 6.4L muffler is tiny). I'm just old and past the loud pipes phase of my life. Now I like to actually be able to talk with my passengers or hear the radio without having to blast it.
