So I bought a 96 f-250 with the 7.3 automatic. 360,000 on the clock. I bought it with an issue of the trans shifting pretty hard. The odometer didn't work when I bought it 3 days ago, I put a speed sensor and a fuse in it and it worked and that took care of the tranny code I was getting, but now it still shifts hard and I am noticing the torque converter is not locked when I go to drive after I start it, it doesn't lock up till halfway through 3rd gear. Then it'll lock up and be fine the rest of the drive, but the shifts after it locks up are HARD. I am wondering if the torque converter is still good, cause there are no noises. No wobbles or shaking, drives very well when I am cruising around 55, no slipping from the clutches, and has plenty of power and throttle response when it is locked. I was thinking it could be a combination of the lockup clutch and it being in limp mode, would I be correct in this? I don't even know if it is in limp mode or not, any help would be cool
You need to reset the code (unplug battery cables) and try again, after you do that reset your APS (accelerator Possition Sensor) by opening the key to the KOEO (Key On Engine Off) position press the accelerator pedal slowly to you get to WOT in less than 10 seconds then one turn key to the OFF position, do this 3 times, this will reset you APS which was trying to correct the problem your tranny was going thru

JUst tried all that, still no changes. I can feel the torque converter still engaged when I come to a stop, cause the truck almost dies then it unlocks at the last moment and idles fine
