Problems after huge backfires

I have a 1986 ford f150 that i bought almost a year ago and the previous owners swapped this truck roughly a 1977 460 and a NP 435 manual transmission i believe, (not sure what the engine came out of). ive been slowly working on the truck and now after i got some work done to the clutch and had a mechanic put on a new 650 CFM edlebrock carb, i was driving the truck and i ended up running out of gas on the way home, and right before the truck started the struggle to keep gas to the engine it shot an insanely loud backfire out of the exhaust that could probably be heard from a mile away, made it next to a gas station and got gas, and now that its filled with gas it seems to be sucking a lot of air from near the carb. it also has a rough idle and kept the super loud backfires on until i got home, after those huge backfires and now the air sucking from somewhere near the carb theres a slight knocking somewhere near the transfer case and the idle is extremely rough. please excuse me cause i don't have to much knowledge of my truck and engine, but im wondering if i should be worried those backfires cause any kind of damage or with that slight knocking i should that im not 100% sure where its coming from

im bassiclly looking for any insight on what i should look into or what all i should be worried about. anything will help im just trying to figure what my next gameplan should be besides trying to get the carb to stop sucking a lot of air. im still slightly worried it will keep backfiring like that again and damage something else, now it is straight piped with a duel exhaust with a resignator on both sides of the exhaust. but i know it shouldnt be backfiring anywhere near that loud, considering it backfires some cause of the exhaust system. any help would be helpful

I would start looking for vacuum leak(s) from a cap or hose the blew off when it backed fired.
To do that get carb cleaner with the plastic straw and with the motor running spray around the base of the carb and work your way out to other vacuum points.
If the idle speed changes then where your spraying is where the vacuum leak is.

A vacuum leak will make it run ruff and could cause it to back fire.
