Exclamation Carb Gushing Fuel

Went to start the truck today, after sitting for 5 days. Started for a moment, then fouled out and would not start. I smelled gas so I went around and sniffed at the tailpipe to see if I could smell gas and know that it was flooded. Well, I smelled a little, but more up front. There was a puddle of gas underneath my truck. The side of the carb, the intake and exhaust manifolds and the side of th engine itself were soaked with gas. After getting a charged hose and a fire extinguisher, I had a friend turn the motor over while I watched, (air cleaner I cover off of course) I'm not sure what that copper tube is called, the one that angles out of the top of the carb. Well, gas was burbling out of that tube and also appeared to be coming out of the carb somewhere on the side or front. The carb was replaced by the Ford dealer in Stockton, CA in early April.

I'm supposed to be leaving in the morning for a motorcycling holiday, pulling my toy-hauler. I've got people counting on me.

Does anybody have any idea what this might be caused by? Could it be something as simple as a stuck float? I'm not real up-to-speed on these carbs.

Sounds like your float is stuck or it has a hole in it. Take the carb apart and check for dirt in the bowl and on the needle & seat. Shake the float around to see if gas has leaked into it.

Try banging on the carb without breaking it. The float may pop up.
Once fixed, change the oil. Alot of gas has run down into the crankcase.

I tried banging on the carb last night to no avail. I'm pulling it off this morning and tearing into it. Right now my #1 suspect is a holed float.. I hope.

Thanx for the tip on the gas in the oil. That makes perfect sense and did not occur to me.

It was the float

The foat was full of fuel. I'm off to the auto parts store for a carb rebuild kit and some fresh motor oil and filter. Thanx for the advice.

Thumbs down Won't Start

I replaced the float and changed the oil. Everything is hooked back up, I cranked the motor to fill the carb and I know I'm getting fuel because I can look down the carb throat while opening the throttle and I can see the accelerator pump shooting fuel down the intake tract.

It won't start. I even tried starting fluid with no luck. I also noticed a wee bit of gasoline seepage again on the side of the carb.???

I've got a friend coming over to crank the motor for me so that I can check spark. Man, I'm at a total loss.

You might also want to check your oil. Depending on how much fuel dumped down into the engine, it will eventually make it's way into the oil if you've let it sit long enough. Just pull the dipstick....if the oil level looks higher than normal, you have a bunch of gas in the oil and should probably change it.

I had this happen once myself on a FI car...the computer freaked out and let the fuel injectors stay 100% open when the key was on...basically filling the cylenders with fuel in a few seconds....that eventually made it's way past the rings (while I tried to figure out what was going on) and into the oil pan. I eventually noticed fuel leaking from the rear main seal! Good thing I got it figured out before it kicked the engine over!!!! :0

Anyways, just give it a quick check....

Yeah, I pulled the plugs and spun the motor over while they were out. I then repeated that and replaced the plugs. My fresh oil smells a bit like gas again, So I'll be getting that changed again. A friend brought up a good idea. He thinks that the fuel washed all the cylinders down of their oil coating and now the motor is not making enough compression to start.

I'm putting on the Clifford intake and EFI exhaust manifolds on. I figure I'll go ahead and put these parts on, they' ve been sitting her for a few weeks now. When I go to re-fire it, I'm going to follow my friend's suggestion of a couple small squirts of motor oil in each spark plug hole before turning it over.

Thx for all your replies. I'll post an update once I've got everything buttoned up.

I think if you pull the coil wire, you could just crank the starter for awhile, the oil pressure will build up and the cylinders out to get their share.
