crawled under to look at brake line routing, have owned it less than 26 hours at this point--still getting to know the truck....
Found this tag on rear lower block (near #8). Doesn't seem linked to the VIN (which ends in 89918)--should it be?
Not sure what I'm looking at...
And you know it hasn't run hot since the rebuild, or the tag would have fallen off.
This is the most encouraging news now that I've opened up the proverbial box......
I have also heard of lead type "melt-away" tags for warranty claims, etc.
I appreciate the replies, even if I'm a little non-plussed right now about the engine likely having been rebuilt.
@ Rich-Not sure what a "buck" is in this context?

Reason: added last question
small update: front of block on the 1234 side (near front cover water passage) has 7A12 stamped in (didn't find a partial VIN). But I believe that means engine ***'y date was 12 Jan 1977, and that at least seems consistent with the blue sticker production date on B-pillar (01/77).

Don't worry about it being rebuilt already. Just take your time QC'ing it and getting it serviceable, and then enjoy it. What engine is it? 351M or 400?

thanks for the encouragement.
Its a J code VIN (460)
ummmm...I haven't located that yet? somewhere I read says its near the starter? (unclear to me if the starter must be removed). FWIW, the heads castings are D3VE-A2A, which I believe is expected
A "buck tag" is what you get when you are going hunting for the ol 30 pointer.....oops wrong forum. A "buck tag" in a Ford truck application is a tag used on the assembly line so the guys know what parts go on what trucks. As in Custom, XLT, Ranger, at least I understand that is how it worked. They could be found in the engine compartment (fire wall area) and the front of the bed, and this is what it looks like this. And this is NOT a vin plate, even though it had a vi# on them sometimes.
Rich, does this mean I need a hunting license to drive my truck?
I think It only applies in Missouri because everyone knows it's the"Show me" State.
Also a seldom knowbn fact is that Missouri is home to Santa's "Disco Deer"
