Blue spring kit prices

Hi guys,

Being that I bought my truck used with about 100k miles on it, I have no idea if the previous owner did the blue spring update or not. I have a lot of service records and there is nothing I can find showing that's the case. I'm surprised, given that the previous owner spent a lot of money on repairs all with the same seemingly reputable shop (BPD EGR cooler, new Ford oil cooler, new turbo, new EGR valve, coolant filter, etc, etc. That said, the only way to know is probably buy a new kit and pull it apart at the next fuel filter change.

So shopping online, I see BPD offers the OEM kit for $84 while another retailer "Dale's Super Store" seems to offer the exact same thing for $20.

What should the price be, approximately, and where would you guys source the kit from, along with the drain plug at the lower fuel filter which has started to rust?

Thanks in advance.

IMO you would be better off installing a fuel pressure sensor and gauge at this point.

As Mark said, I'd install a fuel pressure gauge first and see where you are.

Blue spring kits, I'd only get one from a Ford dealer. In the early part of my career, I used to work with springs, it's too easy to get ones that are not the right quality, and they will fatigue. Low-priced kits will always use inferior steel and treatment, not to mention the rubber compounds for seals.

Like Mark and Jack say, need to know where you are first. I did mine, then installed the FP sensor. Found my pressure was almost too high after that. Best to do it the other way.

OK, was not expecting that. Everyone I spoke with said "you gotta do it to save your injectors." I did wonder how my injectors had lasted so long on the original spring (unless the previous owner did in fact have it changed).

Something like this gauge what you guys are thinking? Plugs into the capped port on the fuel bowl?

I'd go with this one instead since ideally you want the normal operating pressure to be close to the center of the gauge's range.

You can also mount it in an A-pillar mount. There are other makes out there but quality lowers with price in most cases. Personally I went cheap but never had a problem with the Glowshift. Mine was a dual readout, coolant (red) & fuel pressure (amber).

Reread my post. But fuel pressure at hot idle can be anywhere from 55-75. The real TEST is while driving at Wide Open Throttle WOT, it should never go below 45 psi.

OK, sorry for the misread. That makes sense now. I'm not really into the gauge pods, but I suppose I could mount a fuel gauge somewhere. I have rear air springs installed with a pressure gauge mounted low below the driver's side "glovebox." Maybe a second gauge there would be OK.

Pete (87crewdually) had an excellent post in a thread where while on a camping trip, because he was monitoring fuel pressure, he could his slue spring kit had a failing regulator seal, and pressure was suboptimal. So he was able to change the part to continue camping with his family without hurting his injectors.

Well, I think I remember that right ......

The gauge saved me a couple of times but you're referring to the trip to Pigeon Forge when I got into town and observed the gauge dropping to near zero at WOT so I milked the throttle to only about half so i didn't run it under the 45 psi. until I was able to replace it. Running the injectors below 45 psi is detrimental to the injectors usually ending in replacement.
Fuel pressure monitoring is a must in my opinion on most diesel engines.

The modern common rail engines do it for you...low fuel pressure results in automatic reduced power mode. My 2017 F-250 had the fuel filter gel up at -21F; the sensors on the rails detected it, and the engine would only idle.

Trover,

One option as well is get a fancy scanner like the Edge CTS and add a fuel pressure sensor. Then you can just watch it with everything else. I also set up alarms so I don't have to watch the gauge as much. I also added an EGT probe and am working on adding a coolant pressure sensor.
