when I shift from 2hi to 4hi it sounds
like It shifts but then returns to 2hi even though 4hi is selected. Then I get the check 4x4 warning. I’ve replaced the shifter motor and also the tccm with no luck. Any help would be appreciated
I had a 2011 F350 that had that happen a few years back
Was driving up a small steep driveway with about five inches of wet snow, so put it in 4wd. Got the same messages, and a larger wrench symbol. Didn't seem to go into 4wd (couldn't get up the driveway).
The issue seemed to be that the auto locking hubs were gone. all I ended up doing was manually locking the front hubs. Never got the message again.
I know it seems odd, because I don't think the truck "knows" that the auto locking hubs are not working.
all I can say is that I never did anything after that other than manually locking the hubs. Was a dedicated plow truck the last two years, and never saw those messages again.
The truck can sense the vacuum leak, most likely at the hubs, and stops trying to engage them. At least Ford was smart with these trucks and gave the option to lock the hubs. I had a Bronco2 with sealed auto hubs, that was stupid.
So I finally found the problem. I had a broken wire from the big grey plug up inside the driver side wheel well It had rubbed through on the inner fender.
