Key fob losing programming??

I have searched and read a lot on the internet and this forum but I have not found what I’m looking for.
I have a 2011 F-150 with no factory remote start but it does have the keyless entry. I have added a aftermarket remote start ( different key fob) about a year ago. Just recently the key fobs quit working, yes I have checked the batteries.
if I remove the negative battery cable and hook it back up the key fobs work for a while but all of a sudden quit again. I have tried reprogramming them when they quit working and it does not work. If I unhook the neg. Cable and hook it back up I can reprogram them. But they only work for a day or so.
I’m assuming it’s a issue with the truck, I have went back to the shop that put in the remote starter and they said the two systems are not linked together and will not affect each other - which makes sense since it has been working fine for the last year.
what else can I check?
thanks for any help.

Actually you do have a factory remote start, it just isn't activated and takes a different key with the fob built into it. You need the key with the 4th button and some programming with Forscan (free windows software), Windows tablet or laptop/pc with usb port, a usb/obd2 pass thru cable off amazon and an antenna for range.

The remote start will work without the antenna but you have to be close to the truck.

Anything could be wrong with aftermarket systems. I couldn't say what, there's so many different ones out there. I only know the factory system and how to diag it.

the aftermarket remote start works fine, it’s the factory keyless entry that works for a day and then quits working until the battery is unhooked and re-connected.
Do you think the issue is related to the remote start? It has been fine for almost a year. I know things can go bad anytime, just wondering if they may be linked??

Check the hood switch connector for moisture, corrosion, pushed back pins etc. Unplug it then reconnect it a few times. That one switch is responsible for most of the systems malfunctions which is why it may work after you disconnect the battery. It's not the act of doing that so much as it is the switch being exercized when you open/close the hood.

It's mounted to the driver front fender near the degas bottle, has an accordion boot on it.

that switch works fine. I have messed with it while the hood was open and noticed it honked twice when the hood was open and when I pressed the switch down the horn honked only once. I did that a few times.

Did you disconnect it's connector and inspect it like I decribed above?

I have not done that yet, I am not with the truck at the moment but will try later.
are you saying to unplug it and leave it unplugged or unplug it and look for moisture issues / clean it and plug it back in?

Unplug it, check for corrosion, water intrusion, pushed out pins then reconnect/disconnect it a few times ending with it connected.

I unplugged it and everything looked dry and good. I tried to clean the pins off (scrape with a blade) and then reconnected/disconnected it a few times. I hope it works, thanks for the recommendation. I don’t drive it too often so it may be a few days before I know if it worked.

Moisture in one of the plugs seems even more likely now. Make sure there is a dab of dialectic grease on the pins to prevent corrosion!

May be unrelated — when I bought my truck it had an aftermarket remote start that the dealership was unaware about. The key fob would continuously stop working.

Turned out the dealership only received one key when they procured the car. They deleted all of fobs and reinstalled the original and they new one.

This totally messed up the aftermarket remote start programming and it was jamming the car’s computer somehow.

The dealership reprogrammed the fobs 2 times and threw their hands up saying it would cost thousands to get through the wiring to restore it. (They also said the same for the aftermarket fog light connector that is now preventing me from having a working passenger fog light dispite a new bulb).

Well, I Google the remote start install instructions and worked backyards to remove it. Took 15 mins.

Never have had another problem with my key fobs since then.

I cleaned the hood sensor connection and went all week without using the remote start and the key fob worked fine. As soon as I used the remote start the key fob quit working. So I guess it’s time to find out why after almost 1 year the remote start is now messing with the key fobs… this should be fun since the remote start installer told me already that the remote start should not have any effect on the fobs.

Disconnect the after market r/s and use the one your truck came with.
