I have an '03 windstar that the battery light comes on usually and then goes out after 5 minutes or so. I have checked the alternator output with a volt meter while the light is illuminated and above idle @ 13.8 vdc. Same voltage when the light is extinguished
RPM or speed has no effect on the light.. There seems to be no rhyme or reason to this. Might be on for an hour or could be off for an hour. The battery is always charged and is new but the age of the battery doesn't seem to make a difference. This has been an issue for probably 10 years or so & I've had several batteries since then.
Another issue, although not as annoying, is the interior overhead light, both front & rear stay on dimly all the time you're driving. They come on bright when they are called for but never shut off entirely unless they are turned off at the overhead switch.
Thanks for any help

Sounds like some sort of failure in the alternator regulator. Since it's built into the alternator, getting another alternator would be the best bet for trying to cure the dash light problem.
On the domelight problem, are they regular bulbs or have you changed them to LED? LED bulbs are famous for staying on dim in some of these circuits.
Thanks for your reply Franklin2. I think you’re right on the dome lights. They are LEDS , colored ones at that.
As far as the alternator goes you’re probably tight there too. It’s the original alternator still operating @ 223000 miles. Probably time for a new one. I think I got my money’s worth out of this one.
