Transmission Cooler

I wanted to get some opinions on using a Heat Sink Transmission Cooler like this. Has anyone used one? If so does it work good?

I have very limited space so I am looking at options like this. If I use this style I will probably figure out a way to add some sort of scoop next to it to force air over it maybe even some sort of 12 Volt Fan as well.

Let me know your thoughts!

Luke...take a look at the Derale line of coolers. They consist of a radiator and an attached fan assembly. I used one with the AOD on my 40 build and added an inline temp sensor that I used to control when the fan was activated. You can determine which model will work best for you based on the amount of space you have and the cooling you need.

My question is how well does it keep the Trans Cool with the Exhaust directly below it? This was my concern about mounting one in a similar location.

hard to tell Luke, since I don't have a temp gauge on the transmission... but at the very least...it couldn't hurt eh ??I guess I could take a long ride and check the
cooler temps with an ir gun...but I can hardly get my arm under the running board...have to get it on a lift to test that

Okay thanks.

The reason I am concerned is I want to run it as the sole cooler however Texas summers can get real hot especially if the cooler is above the Exhaust. That is why I am up in the air about the location so much.

I am No Racer but I like to take long drives and listen to Music to unwind. The last thing I want is to smoke my Transmission in the summer.

If you ever get a chance I would appreciate any temperature readings after a good drive.

I can't answer your question directly Luke but I can say that a fellow club member has the same setup as I have pictured here on his 55 with a built 302 and an AOD and it runs just fine. His temp sensor cycles the fan on/off as necessary and his trans temp gauge indicates that the fluid temp never exceeds the upper temp range. SoCal is not Tejas but he regularly makes runs to Tucson, Lake Havasu, and other hot spots without issue. Hopefully before the end of the year I will have some firsthand data to report from the 40.
BTW - as you can see, I have my exhaust wrapped to add some extra thermal isolation

Which direction does the air flow are you pushing or pulling the air?
