Trans Cooler Location

My 79 4x4 has what I believe is a factory trans cooler mounted in front of the radiator. It is actually about 4 inches in front of the radiator mounted to a bracket. Shouldnt the cooler be right in front of the radiator so that the engine fan can draw air through the tranny cooler when four wheeling? There is virtually no air flow at crawling speeds when four wheelin in rocks, trails, hills, etc, and this is when the tranny gets its hottest. Is this normal?

Thanks!

I am guessing here since my tranny cooler is used most often while towing on the freeway. My 94 F250 has a facotry cooler mounted maybe 2 inches in front of the main cooler. While towing in 100+ weather at about 70mph, I will usually sustain about 180 to 190 fluid temps. I have seen it spike once to around 230 after a long hot drive when I had to back my trailer slowly up a slight hill maybe 1 block.

Yes the cooler probably should be close to but not touching the main cooler. You will get better airflow thru the cooler at slow speed and yes you do build up a lot of heat rock crawling, so I have read.

You might consider an electric fan assisted cooler. I have seen a few in the past few weeks on the website. I think it was Hayden unit. I would be very tempted to get one of those if I did a lot of off roading.

Good Luck,

Jim Henderson

Are you sure it's a transmission cooler and not power steering cooler?
You can install one with a pusher fan like this.

Yes, it is a tranny cooler. I am pretty sure it is a factory installed item. I would like to install a fan for the tranny cooler only, but not sure where to find one small enough. This cooler is not the tube and fin style. It is designed like a small radiator (as close as I can describe it) Maybe 12 inches long by 6 inches wide.
